Windows xp fast boot tweaks

Reboot after applying this tweak. I don't have a "NtfsMftZoneReservation" entry. A value of Y for this setting enables the boot files defragmenter. This setting defragments the boot files and may move the boot files to the beginning fastest part of the partition, but that last statement is unverified. Mine was already set to "Y". While it increased my boot time by about seconds, it seemed to slow things up a bit between entering my Logon info and getting to a full loaded desktop.

I'm thinking that if you're allocating extra resources to get a faster boot time, you're probably going to slow down your systems overall performance if you're stripping resources from it. I think the [H]orde already did.

Like many of the comments here, I'm not that impressed by this article. It certainly doesn't live up to the traditional Ars high standard. What I'd like to see is some indication that the author really understood exactly what he was proposing.

Presumably they had good reason? I hope Ars didn't pay money for it; publishing things that some people might not like such as Jade's recent article which I did like is one thing; publishing things that are wrong is another. Can Ars pull articles? Or at least give this one to someone knowledgeable to edit it DriverGuru? Quite a shame. Guess I'm not a real man then. No no no!

That makes you a Man's Man, a king among men, my l33t friend! The ntfsmftzonereservation is a useless thing for modern computers.

Actually since NT4 apparently. On a 20GB partition since it does apply to volume size, not disk size , the setting of 2 results in 5GB of the partition being reserved for the MFT. My current MFT size is only 35MB, and while I don't have nearly as many files as some people, I can't imagine even the most arduous gamer or porn collector needing 5GB of space for the MFT plus, that's only on a 20GB partition, which wouldn't store very many large files.

Really they need to change this setting to reflect the size of new drives. It does result in files ending up being stored farther into the slow parts of drives, because the reserved space isn't used until all other space is taken up. I thought this only made a difference during the initial creation of a partition, but apparently not. More importantly, it couldn't detect my processor nor my chipset - its a P4 1. Did anyone get it to work? Or is it just plain crap?

Very disappointed. I just read the article. I thought people were being overly critical, but now must agree this is a weak, lame article, entirely unworthy of Ars'. If this had been posted in the Forums, the author would have been ridiculed and derided. Ceasar, is that all it takes to be a contributor to Ars? I have to tell you, I'm quite a good writer and have many great article ideas.

The only worthwile tweak in this piece was bootvis. Other than than that, most people would get better results tweaking system services. The average user doesn't need and will never use most of them. Personally I have only 8 services running, as opposed to the of a default install.

Other than that, people can download X Setup if they want a friendly GUI for experimenting with other settings including all those covered in this article. Attempting to launch so many things at once indeed, if this key does what the article says it does causes disk thrashing, actually slowing the process down.

Not worth the feel good factor of the login screen popping up fast. Considering that A Ms already tested and configured most things for the optimal performance vs. Aside from the optimization of file placement as DriverGuru mentioned, I'd expect that it initiates ALL the tasks that XP normally does during idle time, like Indexing for one.

Just to let you guys know, the author should be weighing in on the feedback here, soon, so we'll see what he says. Mentioned above that this one disables the recently run programs list. It disables a lot of stuff. Policy: Disable user tracking Description:Prevents the system from remembering the programs run, paths followed, and documents used. Registry Value:"NoInstrumentation".

Ars Centurion et Subscriptor. Lord Pachelbel. Ars Praefectus et Subscriptor. Ars Praetorian et Subscriptor. Will there be a PDF of this article?? NO YUO!!! Ars Legatus Legionis et Subscriptor. I think all of you are right. In replays in this page it is shown clearly not to use 5, and i agree so you can delete this page , or you can leave it for users to read discutions to learn more as i learned thanks to all you good friends shirin.

Posted 12 June - AM Hi Shirin , If you have found further information that changes the status of your post 1 why not as Peter suggests I suggest that you change the '5' to '1' in your primary post. Peter In that way you will not need to delete, just a suggestion, you could also put a note to say why you have made an edit so as not to confuse visitors arriving at this post?

I suggest that you change the '5' to '1' in your primary post. Posted 13 June - PM Hello everyone, what a discussion in my absence! I have a few things to clarify: At no point I meant to be bashing shirin , please dont feel let down. I just wanted to present what the documentation has to say on this, and it says clear and loud "can't be". As written in my post, and from various descriptions of the effects, I still believe featrue 2 gets somehow enabled, not 1 - I had to wrap my head around it too, just remember its a Microsoft-parser that interprets these values.

So, editing over a post that contains info based on a third party the other sites with info that is speculative, is risky. I do believe right now it has the complete opposite effect with value 1. Also I need to point out, any setting except the default 3 has drawbacks, application-prefetching is very important for any program using plugin-files Office, Adobe products, Antivirus and boot-prefetching is a no-brainer.

Windows tweaks become "legendary" fast. May it be the nature of closed source, other sites almost never testing or researching, or Microsoft's history of bad default settings. You must be careful with these things! Additionally, more info on this topic: Windows Server and later has the default setting of 2 here boot-prefetch because a server isn't supposed to start normal apps, just services.

If you use your server more like a desktop, you might want to enable app-prefetching as well 3. Also, seeing how psc -Peter agreed with me, I come to believe the stereotypes are right, and backing everything up with logic is indeed a german thing Cheers, Flo.

I will be away for 1 week so if someone could make the necessary amendmants in my abscence I would be much oblighed, this topic I see, needs further discussion to reach a consensus of opinion maybe? Don't forget the index. I see that 2No downloads have been taken to date also EEEeek! I think I will delete it as a precautionary measure just for now! See my edit in the first post. Have nice vacation! Posted 13 June - PM See my edit in the first post.

Very diplomatic way of putting it Peter, but my recommendation would be: If someone plans to play with this, try 2 servers do it, cant be that bad and nothing else.

Of course, either way no harm done. It is still available here: Install aborts on non-i8xx chipsets Sorry again to cause this confusion here, somehow I feel that every topic I take part in evolves to a big discussion, no idea why Flo PS: Have a nice holiday ispy , and such a good timing to get out of northern europe with the rain and all. And also i know atleast one popular program "Registry Mechanic" uses this tweak in it's optimization section.

Yes ,There is no documentation to suggest that this setting that i saied. But I have a question ,you thing that all of above mentioned sites and programes that use value "5" are wrong and just you are right? I think you do not attention to one important point: Me and may be most of Tutorial writers,Just publish our exprements, and we do not inforce users to do as we did. The users are free to select what to do. In my exprement the value "5" works better than values I know a lot of tweaks to make my computer to work better and faster, they did not make effects as i wanted.

Now why do not we let users to do any way that they like. You are just trying to say MS documents are right and all others are wrong. I agreed with you about What MS doucuments say.

But in my way I will allways trust to my exprements, because i feel them,i see them Last word : I am just and just basic user but with a world of exprements. Do not ask me to trust to your ideas instead of my expriments shirin. Back to Tutorials. Reply to quoted posts Clear. Sign In Use Twitter. Need an account? Register now!

I've forgotten my password. If you are a fan of minimalist desktop experiences, hiding the desktop icons are an easy way to clean up the Windows interface.

Instead of saving everything to your desktop, use the default profile folders such as downloads and documents. Actually hiding all the icons on your desktop is a very simple customization hidden in the right-click context menu.

Just right-click on the desktop, select View, and then Show desktop icons to remove the check. The icons will be hidden instantly.

SSL is typically used in situations where logon credentials are validated or when other confidential information is exchanged e. The exploit Google discovered works by taking advantage of two vulnerabilities.
